Hi, this is Nancy Peske, the Sensory Smart Parent with a Sensory Smart parenting tip for you. Make sure that your child with sensory processing issues gets plenty of opportunities for movement and exercise throughout the course of the day, especially at school.
Our kids, like all kids, need exercise and socialization for health and well-being but our kids especially need the exercise in order to self-regulate their mood, focus and their attention levels and their movement level.
So taking away recess is actually counterproductive. Discipline comes from a Latin word meaning “to teach” and punishment is not discipline; it’s not teaching. We need to be able to teach our kids the skills they need in order to meet social expectations, complete their homework and their worksheets, and hand them in on time.
So if we focus on the skills rather than the punishment, there’s no reason to be punishing our kids. There’s only natural consequences. And taking away recess or losing recess should not be a natural consequence.
